My Dog Spencer

Posted: July 21, 2013

My dog sleeps a lot.  I was thinking a few days ago and realized my dog has no idea that one day he will die.  Unlike humans, animals live not having the realization of their own mortality.  Maybe that's why he sleeps so much?

Humans are gifted with the knowledge that one day they will die.  It is truly an amazing gift.  However, it seems, humans would rather not think about their own mortality and they certainly don't want to dwell on where they go after death.  As Christ followers we have hope, however we are admonished in Romans 13:11-14.

And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

When I attend a funeral I find myself becoming introspective.  I examine my life, then promise myself that I will concentrate on things that have eternal significance.  What has eternal significance in your life?  Let's not be deceived and spend our resources on things that have no eternal value.  It is high time to wake up.
