Real Fruit, By: Jonathan Rovetto

When I was younger, it seemed no dining room table was complete without plastic fruit.  Sure, it looked good, but it tasted like wax!   So when I started having that waxy taste in my mouth again, I had to ask the Lord, what's up?

Our small group has been meeting for about a year now.  It hasn't always been easy but it has been really rewarding.  The temptation for me, as a leader, is to judge the "fruitfulness" of the group by how much it has grown in numbers.  I have to remind myself that some things I have heard over the years, from organized religion, may not necessarily be true.  I had been instructed that growth in numbers and an increase in giving are signs of spiritual health.  Our brick and mortar church tracked and reported those every week.

The real fruit, of course, is seen in Galatians 5:22-23.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

It's easy for a person to stand in the balcony and count how many people are at a service and it's easy to count the money in the back room, but measuring an increase in joy and love, well that is a bit more complicated.

For our group, and for myself, I have seen a tremendous growth in the fruit of the Spirit.  And that is what I am focusing on. Yes, our numbers will grow, but that is His doing.  For now I am taking a big bite and enjoying the sweetness of our Lord Jesus Christ!
